INDIA | THE TERAI & ALMORA

The Terai Belt and Almora does offer some of the best nature experiences in India and is an Amala favourite, combining the lush lowland forest of the Terai, home to a myriad of Indian wildlife and Almora, for its unique Himalayan environments and magnetic views of the Himalayan range.

Our journey begins in Dudhwa National Park, idyllically set in the lush Terai Belt. It is home to an abundance of wildlife and provides the perfect habitat for swamp deer and tigers as well a variety of other wildlife. Travellers can look forward to excellent birdwatching opportunities, soaking up the scenic landscapes and enjoying a thrilling experience with majestic tigers which are protected in this park.

We continue west to Philibhit Tiger Reserve, which is one of the lesser visited parks in India, within the Terai Arch, where we will set up a private camp for you, while you explore the amazing ecosystem of this national park. From here we move on to Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest national park in India. This forested wildlife sanctuary is known for its rich variety of fauna and flora.

Your journey then concludes as wel head up into the low hills of the Himalaya to Kumaon, in Almora. This picturesque district in Kumaun offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayas and is considered the cultural heart of the state of Uttarakhand. It was here in Almora that choreographer and dancer Uday Shankar set up his dance academy in 1938 that attracted many famous Indian and French dancers. Nature lovers can enjoy day trips to the Deer Park and Martola, both ideal picnicking sites, or take part in the Village Walk, which will introduce them to a slice of Almora village life as it winds through the town, along streams and through cedar and pine forests.
