Lake Kariba is the world’s most voluminous man-made lake, created in the 1950’s when the mighty Zambezi River was dammed. Stretching for more than 200 kilometres along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the lake forms a natural boundary between the two countries. Serene and atmospheric, the lake’s waters are home to abundant wildlife – a particular haven for birdlife – and some truly magnificent sunsets.
Along the southern shores of Kariba lies Matusadona National Park, comprised of large expanses of pristine wilderness characterised by sprawling grassy plains and dramatic rugged mountains. From the vast woody escarpment to the dense bush of the Zambezi valley floor, the park features a diverse range of landscapes boasting excellent wildlife viewing opportunities and serves as a sanctuary for the endangered black rhino.
These are a selection of lodges that we feel combine well for this journey. However we do also have a range of options to consider in each region, and can tailor them to you preference.
The luxurious Bumi Hills Safari Ldoge boasts one of Africa’s finest wilderness locations with an elevated position on a range of remote hills overlooking the serene and shimmering waters of Lake Kariba, enjoying the best of two worlds: Kariba's wildlife-rich shoreline and the proximity to thriving game-viewing opportunities within Matusadona National Park. Ten spacious and contemporary suites are thoughtfully appointed, all with private balconies and superb, uninhibited views over Lake Kariba.
