OMAN | HAJAR MOUNTAINS

We head off in search of Oman’s most dramatic scenery which we find in the Hajar Mountains (Stone Mountains). Towering over at 3,000 metres above sea-level, the range is the highest in the Arabian peninsula. Here, we settle into the perfect base from which to explore the country’s rich culture and spectacular landscape.

We leave Muscat, travelling along the coast before turning inland into Nakhl, where we find a fort-turned-home, hidden in swaying date palms and home to lovely hot springs. Spend some time here before continuing in the direction of Rustaq and the striking Wadi Bani Auf valley. The drive here is considered one of the most memorable off-road terrains in Oman, through slate mountains and steep hillsides.

Continue your drive along the spine of the Hajar, offering magnificent views on the way to Wadi Ghul where we explore old ruins and abandoned villages. The region is known for its traditional methods of carpet weaving, and we uncover these by venturing further up to Jebel Shams to see the works. The road will take us to the edge of the Omani Grand Canyon, where again, jaw-dropping vistas await.

The journey leads you through wonderous places, a quiet mountainside, lively souqs, ancient forts and bustling weekend cattle markets. At night, rest your head in comfortable, remote locations, where night skies are clear of light pollution, and illuminated by stars.
