Umbria: The Green Heart of Italy
Known as the “green heart” of Italy, Umbria has begun winning the hearts of travellers over the sometimes busier Tuscany. With beautiful hill towns, olive groves, vineyards and historic basilicas, the region boasts the unique Italian romance that has us all enchanted. Not to mention its most coveted mushroom—the truffle. These treats grow underground and mature, developing a distinct aroma that attracts animals that scurry about, contributing to the intrigue of the hunt. Join us as we venture to Umbria to experience all things truffle.
Over spring, discover Nero Norcia, a lively festival celebrating the coveted truffle. In a town known for its gastronomy, stalls are set up, exhibitions, folklore performances are put on to showcase local produce all the while inducing spring time gaiety. Find prosciutto pyramids, salami and other cured meats alongside the pure forms of the beloved mushroom.
Whilst in Norcia, we bring you to meet Nicola, our resident cavatore (truffle hunter). Over the years, his team mates have been a helpful pack of dogs—notably Lulu and Tempestina. Aside from being absolutely adorable, these pups are trained scrupulously from young to dig up the truffles. These canines are so valuable Nicola works hard at keeping thieves at bay. Join them as they venture out into the woodlands where the fungi are known to sprout, and learn about the history and intricacies of this trade. And, of course, to cap it off, what better than a truffle-themed picnic under a leafy oak tree.
In 2016 an earthquake struck the peaceful town of Norcia. Scars still remain in the form of deconstructed buildings but the urge to recover is strong. With the allure of delicious Norcian produce and Italian countryside charm, many still flock here, and to a splendid place of rest—the beautiful Palazzo Seneca was the first hotel in town, dating back to the 16th century. Wood and leather finishings, sophisticated interiors and the spa’s Turkish baths are just a few of the draws at this inviting palace.
Sitting at the property’s ground floor is the simple but elegant Michelin-starred Vespasia. With tantalising dishes like wild boar and smoked rice, the restaurant’s creations are bound to please any palate. But look out for its shining star—a simple, traditional spaghetti and tomatoes, tough to master but executed to perfection.
Although past the season of truffles, there is a season for flowers. The beautiful and tiny village of Castelluccio sits high atop of hill just outside Norcia. Come the end of spring, the Piano Grande bursts alive with its famous annual flowering. Also found here, amongst the poppies and violets, are the famous lentils of Castelluccio.
And if you’re still hungry, step into the home of the Bianconi’s, the owners of the aforementioned, stunning Palazzo Seneca. Below ground is where you can join Valentino Palmisano, the Michelin-starred chef in a discovery of Italy’s best kept secrets.
