Nearby, a shoemaker sits with her tools laid out beside her, working methodically as daily life continues around her. Further along, we are welcomed into the home of a shepherd. The house, built from straw and cow dung, is shaped by necessity and the conditions of the land, modest, exposed to the elements, and shared by an extended family. What emerges is a reality that sits quietly alongside the one most often seen. Life here is shaped by its constraints, but not defined solely by them. Children move freely across the land, weaving in and out of the herd, their presence bringing a lightness to the space. There is work, there is hardship, and yet there is also continuity, closeness, and a quiet sense of contentment that does not ask to be explained.

India resists singular definitions. What exists in the cities is only one expression of it; beyond that are places like these, where life moves to a different rhythm, shaped by land, by craft, and by time.
