The Rajasthan Most People Do Not See

6 minutes read

A journey into rural Rajasthan, where time moves differently and meaning is found in craft, continuity and everyday life

by Melody Tan

Rajasthan, for most, is a place of spectacle. Palaces carved from marble, havelis with intricate facades, cities drenched in colour, a kind of grandeur that feels almost cinematic in its scale. It is the version that travels easily across postcards, screens and memory, and yet, it is not the reality for most. India is often described in extremes, crowded, chaotic, bursting at the seams. But beyond the cities, there is another Rajasthan. An hour outside Jodhpur, the landscape begins to open. The roads thin into dust paths, and the air feels lighter, quieter. What replaces the city’s intensity is not emptiness, but a different kind of fullness that reveals itself slowly, where life unfolds at its own pace.

We move between homes scattered across the land. In one, a potter works a hand spun wheel, shaping clay with a rhythm that feels instinctive, while rows of vessels dry under the sun, their surfaces marked by the touch that formed them. In another, a loom stretches across a shaded room, threads passing through steady hands to build patterns repeated over time, unchanged but never stagnant. Nearby, a shoemaker sits with her tools laid out beside her, working methodically as daily life continues around her. Further along, we are welcomed into the home of a shepherd. The house, built from straw and cow dung, is shaped by necessity and the conditions of the land, modest, exposed to the elements, and shared by an extended family. What emerges is a reality that sits quietly alongside the one most often seen. Life here is shaped by its constraints, but not defined solely by them. Children move freely across the land, weaving in and out of the herd, their presence bringing a lightness to the space. There is work, there is hardship, and yet there is also continuity, closeness, and a quiet sense of contentment that does not ask to be explained.

India resists singular definitions. What exists in the cities is only one expression of it; beyond that are places like these, where life moves to a different rhythm, shaped by land, by craft, and by time.

To encounter this is not a revelation, but a quiet recalibration. Journeys like these are not always the most visible, but they are often the most defining. In destinations so often associated with colour and grandiosity, it is these quieter encounters that offer a more complete understanding, a glimpse into the rhythms of daily life that exist beyond what is immediately seen. It is this way of moving through a place, with intention and attention, that shapes how a journey is remembered.

Getting to Rajasthan from Singapore

There are no direct flights from Singapore to Rajasthan, but the journey is relatively straightforward with one connection.

The most seamless routes are via Delhi or Mumbai, with multiple daily flights on carriers such as Singapore AirlinesAir India and IndiGo. From there, domestic flights connect to cities like Jodhpur, Jaipur and Udaipur.

Alternatively, you can fly into Delhi and continue by train or private car. The drive from Delhi to Jaipur takes around five hours, while Jodhpur is closer to nine, offering a gradual shift in landscape as the cities give way to more open, arid terrain.

For those with time, trains remain one of the more atmospheric ways to move through India, slower but deeply immersive.

Where to Stay in Rajasthan

RAAS Jodphur

Set within the old walled city, at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort, RAAS offers one of the most striking vantage points in Jodhpur. From almost every angle, the fort rises into view, close enough to feel almost within reach.

Rawla Narlai

A restored 17th-century country retreat, Rawla Narlai unfolds across courtyards and gardens, where life feels gently removed from time.
Evenings are often spent under open skies, in a setting that feels both intimate and deeply rooted in place.

RAAS Devigarh

Set within an 18th-century palace in the Aravalli hills, Devigarh is a study in quiet contrast—minimal, considered interiors within a historic fort.
Removed from the city, it offers a slower, more contemplative experience shaped by landscape and light.

Rajmahal Palace Jaipur

Once a royal residence, Rajmahal Palace is an eclectic retreat set within the heart of Jaipur, where bold interiors meet storied history.
Surrounded by gardens, it offers a quieter counterpoint to the energy of the Pink City.
